Well, where should I start? We are one month into the SCD project and it has come to a screeching halt. Between all of the family stuff going on this week and the complete lack of motivation to be careful with our eating, we are taking an unplanned break.

The thing is, it doesn't seem like this diet is good for J. For the first two weeks, we followed the guidelines very strictly and his ulcerative colitis was worse than ever. He had symptoms of an extreme flair up, including the fevers, which scare me the most. He has also lost almost 10 pounds in the last month - trust me, he was skinny enough already.

Having said all that, we have decided to go on a modified version of the SCD. I know Elaine Gotschall is looking down on us and shaking a finger in our general direction, but I cannot watch J go through this again.

We will continue to watch what we eat and limit our carb intake. I baked bread tonight (pictures and recipe to come) and I feel like it's ok to eat it. Our main goal will be to eat as naturally as possible. Limiting preservatives and eating mostly meat and vegetables. I will also continue to make yogurt because I am completely addicted to it and feel like my day is not complete unless I have a bowl.

I will continue to use some SCD based recipes and intend to complete the Daring Bakers Challenges with SCD regulations in mind. I know there are a lot of people out there that commit 100% to this diet and get great results, but I don't think it's for us.

Re: SCD Update

I just started doing a semi SCD, I was just getting used to the way it works before I tried it full on. I had a bad flare up this week, it started with a small one on Tues, started after lunch, and for some reason my flares do tend to start after lunch! But that one calmed down by the evening. The next day I had the same, started after lunch, then got worse over the day, until by the evening I was screaming in pain every five minutes, it lasted ten hours. I had to take the next day off work and felt shattered and still had a sore gut. Usually I can trace the flare to something I have eaten, but this time I was only eating very natural foods, no carbs. I am not going to go through the strict first stages, I don't want to loose weight and I don't want to have to eat meat or eggs practically every day.

Re: SCD Update

Maria, I think you have to do what works for you. I have heard amazing stories of people doing a strict SCD and completely "curing" their UC. It just doesn't seem to work for my husband and I hate that. He does better eating complete crap (lots of carbs, cheap frozen pizza, ice cream, etc) than he does following the SCD rules.

I hope you can find your perfect balance. At this point, we have pretty much given up the SCD, although we try to eat naturally, no preservatives. I make our bread from scratch (the recipe is posted on here, if you want to try it) and we don't use a lot of refined sugar, but choose honey as a sweetener instead. I am also still doing the Daring Bakers' Challenge and modifying the recipes to be more natural.

Good luck to you. Please stop by and let me know how things are going.
