One of my most unforgettable vacations took place on a milestone birthday, thanks to my thoughtful daughters who gifted me a weekend staycation in the breathtaking city of Santa Barbara, California—fondly called The American Riviera.
Driving up the Pacific Coast was serene and awe-inspiring. The ocean sparkled on one side, while the Santa Ynez Mountains rose like silent guardians on the other. The weather was perfect—clear skies and a soft breeze that kissed our skin as we arrived at the Ritz-Carlton.
From the moment we pulled in, I felt embraced by grace. I use a wheelchair, and a kind staff member greeted us, offering help with our bags and arranging wheelchair-friendly transportation. He even gave us a tour of the grounds, proudly pointing out landmarks—including the suite where Oprah Winfrey once stayed.
We headed straight to the beach, my favorite place. There, I simply sat—listening to the crashing waves, smelling the salty air, and watching families laughing and loving on each other. It was deeply peaceful.
Dinner that night, arranged with the help of the hotel concierge, was oceanfront and exquisite—every bite prepared just the way I liked it. The staff’s kindness added to the flavor.
We strolled down State Street, Santa Barbara’s stylish downtown full of flair, elegance, and life. The city’s Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, artistic vibe, and natural beauty made me feel like I was living in a postcard.
But what made the vacation truly unforgettable was when my nephew surprised me by joining the celebration. Tears of joy rolled down my cheeks. That simple gesture made my heart full.
Santa Barbara gave me more than a vacation—it gave me presence, peace, and the joy of being surrounded by love.
