On July 15, I invite you to pause and celebrate National Give Something Away Day—a time to reflect, refresh, and rediscover the joy of giving.
This holiday, founded in 2015 by Linda Eaton Hall-Fulcher, centers around a simple yet powerful idea: giving benefits the giver just as much as the recipient. As a self-described “giver,” Linda created this day to highlight the win-win nature of generosity—whether you’re sharing time, money, knowledge, or simply a kind word.
The Personal Side of Giving
This year, I’m honoring the day in two ways that feel deeply personal.
First, I’m nominating my fellow writer Beverly Collins for the Pushcart Prize. Beverly has been nominated four times but has never taken home the win. Her poetry, her book Quiet Observations, and her unwavering spirit inspire me. I believe in her work, and giving her my voice of support is a gift of time, encouragement, and belief.
Second, I’ll be making a donation to the Sickle Cell Foundation, a cause close to my heart. Giving in this way allows me to invest in communities who need support and care.
These acts of generosity are not grand. But they’re intentional. And they’re healing—not only for others, but for me.
Ways to Celebrate National Give Something Away Day
You don’t need money or a large platform to make a difference. Here are simple, meaningful ways to observe the day:
- Donate unused items from your home
- Call or visit someone who’s sick or shut-in
- Give a compliment, share a book, teach someone a skill
- Volunteer to teach tech to seniors or help someone apply for a job
- Share your story—vulnerability is a gift too
These everyday actions remind us that giving doesn’t drain—it expands.
The Science of Giving
Research shows that acts of giving can actually benefit your physical and mental well-being. Here’s how:
- Lowers blood pressure – giving has been linked to healthier hearts
- Reduces stress – generosity releases tension and fosters joy
- Releases feel-good hormones – such as oxytocin and endorphins, promoting calm, connection, and peace
Giving isn’t just good for the world. It’s good for your soul.
Personal Development Through Generosity
As a personal growth coach, I’ve seen time and again how giving can break cycles of fear, scarcity, and isolation. Giving builds connection. It nurtures courage. It reminds us we are not alone—and we are not powerless.
When you give from your strengths, you also grow your capacity to lead, love, and live with purpose.
