A Lesson in Faith, Fear, and Responsibility**
By Coach Diane Williams
Can you imagine lying in bed and watching four intoxicated strangers come into your home?
I was a thirty-eight-year-old divorced mother who couldn’t walk. Rheumatoid arthritis had nearly frozen my joints, forcing me to rely on my daughters to be my arms and legs—to do the things I physically couldn’t.
Just before dawn one August morning, I was lying in bed praying when I heard the front door knob turn. From my bed at the end of the hall, I watched silently as four men stumbled into our home.
They stopped in the living room, talking in slurred whispers.
“Slim, that jam was weak. The chicks were stuck-up.”
“I got a few numbers. I’ll use them as soon as I wake up,” Slim chuckled, collapsing on the couch.
Their chatter was crude, their presence uninvited—and yet, I stayed calm.
“Good morning,” I called out brightly.
No response. I raised my voice.
“GOOD MORNING!”
One of the men groaned, “Van, tell your woman to shut up. She’s hurting my head with that noise.”
“Man, that’s not Van’s lady.”
“Van, put your woman to sleep!”
Then came the dawning realization.
“This isn’t Van’s house! We better get out of here!”
Panic spread among them. Two men dragged the others up, mumbling curses as they stumbled out the door.
Moments later, my daughters, Jasmine and Tiffany, burst into my room.
“Who was that?” they screamed.
“Van’s friends, apparently,” I said calmly.
They stared in shock as I explained what happened. And then came the question that lingered:
“Who locked the door?”
The truth was, no one had.
For weeks, I had been reminding the girls to secure the house each night. But that morning, the lesson was learned in a way none of us could forget. It only took five minutes—and four drunken men—for my daughters to understand what responsibility really meant.
That night wasn’t just about fear—it was about faith, calm, and trusting your inner strength even when you feel powerless.
Sometimes life’s most frightening moments hold the very lessons we’ve been trying to teach all along.
Reflection & Takeaway
When challenges or unexpected situations enter our “home”—our lives—we have two choices: panic or peace.
I chose peace.
The calm we practice in chaos becomes the courage our children inherit.
